It's 2 AM and the Baby Looks Great: Don't Be Fooled By A Brief, Resolved, Unexplained Event!

Frightened parents often call 9-1-1 for their infant’s sudden change in breathing, color, tone, or responsiveness. When EMS arrives, the infant looks totally fine. While tempting, a non-transport decision for this well-appearing infant can be deadly. Why is the old “ALTE” now called a “BRUE” (Brief Resolved Unexplained Event)? Can EMS clinicians even diagnose a “BRUE”? What are the key history and physical exam clues? How should we document them? Does every infant need EMS transport? If so, where? What happens in the ED? This presentation explains why a possible BRUE matters, and the current, science-based EMS care for these pint-sized patients.
