FAST Session: Strangled by Tradition: Why Cervical Collars Need To Go
Cervical collars are still common in EMS—not because the evidence strongly supports them, but because they’ve become routine. This session takes a hard look at that routine. Current research shows little proven benefit, while highlighting real downsides: increased intracranial pressure, airway challenges, pain, pressure injuries, and delays in patient care.
This isn’t about making minor adjustments. It’s about rethinking how we approach potential spine injury. Instead of defaulting to collars, we focus on patient-centered spine care: thoughtful neurologic assessment, hemodynamic support, and careful, deliberate movement only when needed. Grounded in current guidance from National Association of EMS Physicians, this session translates evidence into practical field decisions.
Straightforward. Practical. Evidence-based.
You’ll leave ready to:
Move beyond routine collar use Replace outdated habits with purposeful, patient-first care Lead protocol discussions with confidence and evidence
Cut the Velcro. Treat the patient.
