HMP Education, LLC has designated an unrestricted educational grant from Convatec Inc. for support of this session.
Approximately 1 out of 500 Americans live with an ostomy in the United States with 150,000 new surgeries performed each year. Although ostomy surgery can be lifesaving, postoperative complications can significantly impact mental and physical wellbeing. Interprofessional coordination and assisting patients with ostomies occurs in all practice settings and requires interactive patient education and clinician knowledge of pouching techniques for complicated stomas. Patients need personalized education from start to finish concerning lifestyle and dietary changes, how to choose the correct pouching systems for their needs and strategies to prevent common complications.
