Each year, approximately 100,000 people undergo ostomy surgery in the United States. Up to 1 million people live with an ostomy, which is about 1 in 500 Americans. With early-onset cancer and the increased incidence of inflammatory bowel disease, more young Americans are undergoing ostomy surgery. Whether an ostomy is temporary or permanent, persons with ostomies need education on available resources in the community. This presentation aims to equip attendees with proficiency in the prevention and management of common ostomy-related complication seen in home and outpatient settings. Attendees will have access to community resources with a focus on care coordination to improve the quality of life for persons with ostomies.
