The use of negative pressure wound therapy for large tissue defects has been well established. More recently the role of NPWT has been expanding: it is being used in treating fistulas in the GI tract; prevention of surgical site infections and wound dehiscence in freshly closed surgical wounds, an indication that is expanding and still being evaluated; together with irrigation, use as adjunct in treatment of freshly opened and drained wound infections, which previously was viewed as a contraindication.
