Dr. Alan Wells is Executive Vice-Chair and Thomas J Gill III Professor of the Department of Pathology, and Professor of BioEngineering and Computational & Systems Biology, and is the Medical Director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Clinical Laboratories, and a Staff Pathologist at the VA Medical Center. He is a member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Center for Systems Biology and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Dr. Wells holds an A.B. in Biochemistry from Brown University (1979) and received his D.M.Sc. in Tumor Biology from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1982. Returning to Providence, Rhode Island, he received his M.D. from Brown University in 1988. Following his studies, Dr. Wells completed a postdoctoral Fellowship in Tumor Biology at the University of California in San Francisco, California, and a Residency in Laboratory Medicine at the University of California in San Diego, California. He has over 350 scholarly publications that have been cited over 40,000 times. He has been president of the Wound Healing Society, Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, and American Association of University Pathologists. In addition, he has consulted extensively to industry and is currently the Chief Scientific Advisor for Ocugenix.
Dr. Wells is a physician/scientist with a basic investigative research effort that has had over 30 years of federal and foundation funding to understand how cells respond to their local environment. Dr. Wells is concentrating his research efforts towards tumor dissemination and chemoresistance of tumors and wound healing.
