Afsaneh Alavi MD

Dr. Alavi is a Professor of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her dermatology training in both Iran and Canada, followed by a two-year fellowship in Wound Healing and a Master of Science in Community Health at the University of Toronto. Her clinical and research interests include wound healing, inflammatory skin diseases, and hidradenitis suppurativa.
Dr. Alavi currently serves as Director of the Medical Dermatology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She has received numerous honors, including the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Canadian Dermatology Association (2017), the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Research Award from the HSF Foundation (2019), and the Supervisor of the Year Award from the Mayo Clinic Department of Dermatology (2022). She was also the principal investigator of several clinical trials focused on inflammatory skin conditions.

Inflammatory Ulcers: A Lense on Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Pyoderma Gangrenosum

Hidradenitis suppurativa and pyoderma gangrenosum are painful and chronic inflammatory dermatoses. In treating both, it is integral clinicians address quality of life issues and consider custom treatment options. This session will study various topics around these two etiologically obscure disorders.

Alex Ortega Loayza

Dr. Ortega is a Professor and Interim Chair of Dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where he also completed a Master of Clinical Research. As a native of Lima, Peru, obtained his medical degree from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the oldest medical school in Latin America. After working as a general practitioner in the Navy of Peru, he completed further research training at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill), and then completed his clinical training in internal medicine and dermatology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Following his medical training, Dr. Ortega joined the faculty of VCU for a couple of years before coming to OHSU in May 2016.

Dr Ortega is a medical dermatologist. His clinical interests are psoriasis, patients with sarcoidosis and complex medical dermatology. His main research interest is on pyoderma gangrenosum.

Dr Ortega enjoys working with medical students and residents in clinic as well as in scholarly activities and research projects. He has published several peer-reviewed papers, is a reviewer for several dermatology journals and has spoken at numerous medical conferences.

In his spare time, Dr. Ortega enjoys spending time with his wife and children; when he gets time for himself he likes running, soccer, watching sports and reading biographies.
