Heidi H. Cross is a board-certifed Wound and Ostomy Nurse in Syracuse, NY and a board-certifed Family Nurse Practitioner. She has extensive experience caring for wound and ostomy patients in acute care as well as in long term care facilities. Currently, she is employed by CNY Surgical Physicians consulting for nursing homes in the Syracuse area, and also at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. In addition, she has a busy legal nurse expert practice, performing chart reviews for attorneys.
Ms. Cross is a member of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society, the Post-Acute Wound and Skin Integrity Council (PAWSIC), and the American Nurses Association. She has served on numerous committees related to wound and ostomy care, including as chair of the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board examination committee and the National Conference Planning Committee. Currently, she serves as co-chair of the PAWSIC Skin Failure Special Interest Group. She has done peer review for the Journal of Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing (JWOCN), and published in that journal, as well as in the American Journal of Nursing, the American Nurse Journal of the American Nurses Association, and the Journal of Wound Technology.

Sacral Wound Contamination: A Tactical Approach

Many patients, particularly those with mobility issues, have pressure injuries on the sacrum or coccyx. Stool and urinary incontinence and other sources of contamination complicate wound healing and make it difficult to care for and heal these wounds. This session addresses the multi-faceted components of preventing and decreasing contamination in patients with sacral wounds. This includes identifying the cause of contamination, medical and nutrition considerations, wound management strategies and documentation.
