ADHD: The EMS Superpower

Yes, I understand

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appears within the EMS workforce at considerably higher rates than the general population. This session discusses how the novel, dynamic, fast-paced, high-stakes, and high-intensity environment of EMS naturally attracts individuals whose cognitive superpowers—pattern recognition, hyper-focus, creative problem-solving, and working well under pressure—align with these demands. The presentation also addresses the kryptonite to success: how previous educational experiences and ADHD symptoms undermine learners’ confidence, create defiance, and weaken students’ motivation.

Building on this foundation, the session provides actionable strategies that instructors can easily implement to enhance learning outcomes for all students. By reconstructing these traits as operational strengths rather than obstacles, EMS educators, supervisors, and preceptors can improve learner support, communication, and performance assessment. Reframing educational approaches through this strength-based lens provides educators and leaders with a more accurate approach to supporting performance and professional growth. The session will explore practical pedagogical tools and structural techniques to equip educators to design more adaptive, inclusive, and effective learning environments to improve retention, enhance engagement, and elevate outcomes.
