Matthew Cannefax joined Regions EMS in December 2023 as an EMS Clinical Supervisor. He brings more than 25 years of experience as a field paramedic and earned his critical care endorsement in 2013 to support interfacility transport operations. Matthew is passionate about bridging the gap between prehospital and in-hospital care. He is dedicated to ensuring frontline EMS providers are confident and competent in applying Regions EMS patient care guidelines. His work also focuses on advancing prehospital medicine through research initiatives and supporting provider wellbeing to ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Breathing is Best: A Focused Approach to Neonatal Resuscitation for Prehospital Providers

This presentation provides paramedics with a practical, evidence-based approach to neonatal resuscitation, emphasizing rapid assessment, effective team coordination, and early, decisive interventions during the critical first minutes of life. Attendees will learn a focused approach to neonatal resuscitation, learn to prepare for and recognize neonatal distress after delivery, and gain confidence in performing essential skills such as airway management, positive pressure ventilation, and chest compressions. Through interactive case scenarios, participants will strengthen their ability to stabilize newborns in both prehospital and interfacility transport settings, improving outcomes for the most vulnerable patients.

Emily Wagner

Emily Wagner, MD is dual board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. She will complete her EMS Fellowship in June 2026. She is passionate about medical education and quality improvement, with a particular focus on enhancing care for the most vulnerable patient populations. In her roles as a newborn hospitalist and as a pediatric emergency medicine physician, she is an expert at caring for our littlest patients when they are well or critically ill.
