JohnRey Hassan is an attorney, registered nurse and paramedic with a diverse background in leadership and operations. Presently, JohnRey serves as chief administrative officer and in-house counsel for Royal Ambulance and its sister company Apex Paramedics. JohnRey’s career has spanned from ERs, helicopters and ambulances as an EMT, paramedic and Flight RN, to National Parks as a U.S. law enforcement park ranger/paramedic and to legal settings as a lawyer. Before practicing law, JohnRey led major 911 and IFT ambulance operations, mobile integrated health teams, and rotor air medical operations across a large-distributed geography. He is a certified flight, critical care, and emergency nurse and a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. JohnRey is admitted to practice law in California state and federal courts.

What the EMS Medical Director and Lawyer Want You to Know: Documentation That Stands Up in 2026

Yes, I understand

It’s as ubiquitous as “BSI, scene safe”—you do it on every call, every time. Yet, while we spend hours on clinical pearls and sexy procedures, far less time is devoted to how we document what we actually did and why.

In an era of AI-assisted charting, criminal charges against EMS providers, body-worn cameras, and a constant stream of civil, licensure, and employment risk, strong documentation isn’t a “nice to have,” it’s a fundamental. A good chart doesn’t just say what happened, it tells a truthful, proportional, and coherent story that will hold up months or years later when memories have faded and the facts come to depend on what’s in the PCR.

In this one-hour, scenario-heavy interactive session, an EMS attorney and an EMS medical director will use examples and interactive discussion to break down what makes documentation stand up to scrutiny, from the bedside to QA to the courtroom to the billing office. Instructors will discuss high-risk calls, disagreements between providers or agencies, and the use of AI and video. Participants will leave with practical tools to write clearer, more defensible charts that protect their patients, their license, and their care.

Bryan Sloane

Bryan Sloane is an emergency physician with The Permanente Medical Group in South Sacramento California. He is the medical director for 3 local fire departments and a paramedic education program. He completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance California before going to Stanford for a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and dog.
